Leaping Lizards - A Life Science Habitat!

My students need a tank for a bearded dragon life science habitat and frog & newt habitat.

My Students

Have you ever seen a child trying to catch a lizard or frog? Just to say that they held it, can make their day! Help me make their year! We need a bigger tank to house our bearded dragons and create a new newt and frog habitat.

I teach science to two 5th grade classrooms.

I have many students that come from low income households. Many of these students do not have a pet of their own. These animals help the students learn responsibility and love and respect for science and nature. Many other classes from 2nd-5th come into my room for short informative lessons on the various animals and to view the eggs in the incubator and the babies as they are hatching.

My Project

The students are so excited when they come in the room & realize that I have 3 bearded dragons, 3 leopard geckos, & a guinea pig! They learn so much from these animals. They learn the basic things about the animals: how to take care of them, what they eat, where they are from, etc. But I also use them to teach biomes, habitats, life cycle, water cycle, and even use what they eat (meal worms) in science experiments. These animals allow me to bring nature into the classroom and allow the students to watch part of the life cycle first hand. One of the bearded dragons has laid eggs the last several years. My students watched her dig her cave in sand, lay the eggs, and bury them. We then have to gently take the eggs out and put them in an incubator. They patiently count down the days until they hatch. Once they hatch, the students are always amazed at how little the babies are. You should see the joy on the students’ faces when they get to hold the babies for the first time!

I believe by having these animals in the classroom, it will enhance the students’ love of learning, love of science, and love of nature.

The animals allow us to meet so many science standards in a fun and rewarding way. Not only does this project help my two 5th grade classes, but it will also impact many classes from 2nd-5th grades. Please help us to adequately house the bearded dragons with a bigger tank and add another habitat for many students to explore and discover.
