My Students

Awakening the writer within has been my goal in Writer's Workshop. Teaching writing is a spontaneous event. Displaying poetry and samples of student work at a moment's notice, instead of trying to find a copier with paper, ink, or one that is not out of order, is a frustrating waste of time.

My students are fourth graders in a self-contained classroom.

They come from several surrounding small towns to attend the same rural school. Many homes still do not have computers, or access to the Internet. Technology is a big challenge at our school. I have one classroom computer, and I have a projector. My students are just beginning to explore the mystery behind good writing. Style and voice is missing in their published work. They are just learning how to write longer pieces of writing, and become discouraged easily. I need technology at my fingertips to show them good writing, and give them the tools they need to help them revise their own writing at a moment's notice. Modeling and experimentation allow students to play with writing in a risk free environment, thus creating, lifelong writers. A document camera will give me the opportunity to have good teaching at my fingertips, not in my lesson plans.

My Project

I dream about creating a Writer's Workshop where I am free to move around the room and work individually with students. I see the opportunity to display samples of good writing verses writing that needs to be tickled. If students can see samples of answered writing prompts, open response questions on state tests, and their own individual writing, good and bad, the impact would be great! Many students at this age don't like writing because they don't understand it. They see it as something threatening and impossible to achieve. It isn't fun, so it isn't worth their time and energy. I see a real workshop with students engaged in their writing projects helping each other. I see the world of writing at my fingertips, and I see a new world of young writers who value the importance of their published work. A document camera is the perfect tool for Writer' Workshop! It will give me back my teachable moments instead of having them slip away!

Creating a real Writer's Workshop will be the success story of my teaching career!

The word "spontaneity" says it all when I think about how a document camera will set me free. I will no longer be chained to a copy machine that is out of ink, out of paper, out of order, and down two halls and around the corner from my 22 students. My ultimate goal is to inspire and empower my students to become lifelong writers within our classroom community where their writing is safe.
