My Students

Have you ever tried to write a story and not been able to write fast enough to get it from your brain to the paper? My students face this challenge on a daily basis as they struggle to express themselves through writing.

My students are in the Third and Fourth grade.

They all receive Exceptional Children's services on a daily basis. Many of them will be taking the North Carolina writing assessment this year. Several of their individualized educational plans contain annual goals that relate to writing such as composing sentences and multiple paragraphs.

My Project

My students may have fine motor challenges that make writing by hand difficult. It is crucial for them to learn how to organize their thoughts and ideas, complete the steps of the writing process, and be able to put a final draft on paper. Learning to type and compose their writing assignments on a netbook will relieve their stress. As a teacher, I can assist them in using strategies such as Thinking Maps to complete the first steps of the writing process. They can then use the netbook to compose the final draft. This technology also allows them to work at their desk and not feel excluded from the rest of the class.

I am the mother of a child who has fine motor difficulties and uses a computer to complete writing assignments.

I can personally attest to the positive effect of using this technology. Children who use this technology gain a sense of accomplishment and can even come to love writing as a form of self-expression. It is my hope to give my students the opportunity to experience the same sense of accomplishment and pride that I have witnessed in my own child.
