Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our district has a high dropout rate. Even though I teach First grade students they are exposed to older brothers, sisters and family members who may have for whatever reason chosen to make the decision to dropout of school.

I have 21 First graders this year.

The ethnicities are Asian, African American and Hispanic. We have a high-mobility rate and our school is completely surrounded by apartments. Our school is located in the great state of Texas. We're a part of one of the smaller Independent School Districts in Texas. Our school has a population of about 800 students.

My Project

This summer I brainstormed things that I wanted to include in my classroom this year. And one of the things that was at the top of my list was to have (a) class pet(s). At the ages of 6 and 7 I believe the students will be thrilled to have the role and responsibilities of caring for a pet. These responsibilities will also motivate the students to want to be at school every single day. We will start off with a fish and add other pets throughout the year. The students can earn the objects needed for the pets habitats. Everytime we have perfect attendance we can pull a number and place the number in a 100 pocket chart. When we get straight across or vertical/horizontal we can earn the materials for the pets habitats and then eventually the actual pets. The students will be so excited. I chose to start off with a fish because I want to see how well it works for us. Now, my students need an aquarium.

Another amazing benefit is that I can integrate this activity with other subjects.

Science- Living and Nonliving Things, Math- Capacity and mastery of counting and using a 100 chart, Reading- Read books about pets, Writing- The students can use the pets as great topics to write about and Social Studies- Goods and services and communities. The students will not only learn important skills needed to move forward to the next grade, but they will also develop a love for staying in school!!
