This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 7th grade Reading/Language Arts in a low-income urban suburb. My school is large--over 1100 students, so funding for extras (like novels) is sometimes an issue.

Many of my students struggle with reading.

Most are reading below grade level, and they need books that hook them from the very first chapter. Independent reading for them is difficult because many lack the motivation to do so. They come from a disadvantaged urban area, so for many of them, my classroom is their only access to books.

My Project

My idea is that I will have a selection of novels nominated for the Rebecca Caudill award and my classes will be in competition with each other to see which class reads the most. Having my students participate in a reading competition where they would have access to interesting, thought provoking, entertaining novels that they would normally not choose for themselves will hopefully encourage them to read new authors and try new genres. The idea that my students will also have a chance to vote for the winning novel is something I think they would like.

You can make it possible for my students to read a great selection of books, and give them another great reason to give reading chance.

I tried this competition with another teacher last year and it was extremely successful!
