My Students

I have always attempted to teach my students that all hardships can be overcome with hard work and perseverance. I am always searching for historical role models to offer examples and hope. I feel that the story of Harry Truman is such a story.

I teach in a public high school with 900 students.

Our free lunch percentage is usually around 28%. My school is a wonderful collection of youngsters from four very distinctive communities. I will find in my classes on any given day sons and daughters of farmers and fishermen. They will be seated next to the sons and daughters of business executives and college professors. We have recently had a major military base closure which has deeply affected the community economically. Meanwhile everyone else attempts to hang on to jobs and careers which may or may not last in a difficult economy. Yet, my students carry on. They realize the importance of education. As they strive to improve themselves for the future I feel, very strongly, the need to continue to inspire them. They need to be ready and it is my goal to have them prepared.

My Project

I want my students to read McCullough's biography of Harry Truman. I find his story so compelling and historically significant. Reading this book, learning history from this book will, I feel, enhance my students ability navigate the future. Truman's story is one of hard work, determination and perseverance. He is a great role model for today's students. I will use this book to teach about the Great Depression how it effected Truman and how he turned to public service to help others. I will use this book to teach World War II and how sometimes you need to make tough decisions. I will also use this book to teach about the Cold War and how you have to be prepared and be able to defend yourself. I will use this book to teach self reliance and service. I will inspire my students to prepare themselves for the difficult days that they will encounter. I will give them the story of Harry Truman. I will give them inspiration and a role model for the future.

Simply expressed in a time of crisis we need heroic leadership.

We need to know what to do. When we can't obtain the solutions around us we can always use the past to provide answers to today's issues. I wish to fully prepare my students for any future by giving them all the examples and inspiration that can be provided by reading about Harry Truman.
