My Students

Our students are digital natives trying to express themselves and their knowledge through technology projects so that they may attain skills for the 21st Century. Without video recorders, many projects are not possible.

Our students are in grades 9-12 in a rural county of Virginia.

We are a public school. Our student population consists of varied demographics and economic backgrounds. Many of our students are very technologically literate and others could benefit from more exposure. Our classrooms do not have whiteboards, mounted LCD projectors, or computers that are instantly accessible. Students express an interest in more technology-based projects.

My Project

My students need 2 Flip recorders with accessories for more advanced technology projects. Students, as well as teachers, will use these flip video recorders to complete projects requiring creativity. We use Animoto for students to create project overviews with their choice of digital images, music and text for informative presentations. A hands-on project may ignite a child who we could not reach previously. The school has 2 outdated camcorders that do not allow for addition of video. Of course, video can be inserted into a basic PowerPoint or Photostory3 project to add personalization and creativity. Videos can be easily added to teachers' Web pages to showcase student work. What if teachers recorded their lesson and put it on their Web page! Students who are absent can view the lesson to avoid getting behind. Videos can be sent through email which makes the saving and presenting of individual projects a snap for teachers. Let digital natives use their wisdom with technology to lead us with these projects and their ideas into the future. Learning becomes fun!

Access to these digital recorders will allow hundreds of students a way to create projects that require critical thinking and collaboration skills.

Joining the world digitally is a skill that is required to be successful. Digital hardware allows for creativity and will energize our students just as Facebook, video games and virtual worlds ignite their imaginations. Two video recorders will not be enough for the future but enough to allow our student/staff leaders to showcase what can be done!
