My Students

Currently, there are no GPS units available in our school.

Our school is a larger 2A public school in Texas.

Although football is king, students truly understand the importance of an education. We have a high population of low socioeconomic students who have not had opportunity to use the latest technologies available. Our students want to be engaged in learning through hands-on activities. They are tired of the stand and deliver method of learning; they want to be a part of their education.

My Project

I am requesting 2 Garmin Etrex GPS units. I will show my students how to use the units and further enhance their knowledge by introducing them to geocaching. The students will identify caches, enter coordinates, locate the caches and work toward establishing their own caches. They will monitor their hidden caches over a several months. Additionally, I want to enhance the use of the GPS units by collecting data and importing the data into a GIS program. The students then can analyze real world issues and seek solutions (i.e., traffic patterns, soil erosion, etc.). By being skilled in the use of GPS and GIS, students will have more employment opportunities available to them in the surveying and architecture fields. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the surveying industry is one of the fastest growing job markets with the lower end of the salary wage-earners making around $30,000 with minimal training.

Not only will students gain skills in GPS, but they will develop additional skills that will help them in college and the marketplace.

Skills like predicting solutions, solving problems, and dissecting data. These are higher-order thinking skills that will help make them successful.
