This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students face a significant challenge of poverty and a lack of exposure to modern technology and how it can be utilized to enhance learning.

I am a Speech Language Pathologist in a K to 8 school in an inner city, high poverty school district.

I work with children presenting with significant receptive and expressive language disorders. These students are challenged daily to communicate with others and understand the world around them. They have a wide range of communication skill deficits and are challenged in many different areas. I have had great success using an iPod Touch with the various communication applications to help to build their ability to communicate with others and improve overall receptive and expressive language skills to succeed within our school. Being able to utilize a larger-screened instrument such as the iPad will help to greatly improve their ability to utilize this technology successfully.

My Project

The communication applications available turn the iPad into an easily accessible augmentative communication device and learning tool. Some applications such as Proloquo2go come with over 7,000 symbols and text to speech capabilities and helps many of my students communicate and learn daily. Others review receptive and expressive language skills with immediate feedback to the child of his or her success and accuracy. The students effectively express themselves across many different learning environments to include their classroom, the cafeteria, the playground, etc. The iPad also provides visual cues to help these students successfully transition throughout the school day. The best part of the device is that it is a popular, socially acceptable device for young students and can be used as a tool to connect these students to their typical peers.

Your support will provide my students with significant receptive and expressive language impairments with so much more than an iPad.

You will give these students an opportunity to successfully express themselves, interact with others and cope with the many challenges they experience daily. Your support will "touch" the lives of a group amazing students everyday.
