My 32 students need individual copies of "The Grapes of Wrath" to appreciate some of the sacrifices families make to survive and stay together.

My Students

Even with our country's economy in bad shape, many students have difficulty relating to past events. By living with migrant farm workers and families, John Steinbeck was able to grasp the desperate struggle faced by depression-era families as they moved to a new place to begin a new life.

This book will be for the students in my AP English classes.

Our community is rather small (less than 7,000), rural, and economically depressed. Many students work 30-40 hours per week IN ADDITION to attending school just so they can help their families make ends meet. These students are some of the most amazing students you could ever meet. They work hard and care very much about their hopes and dreams for a better future.

My Project

John Steinbeck's classic "The Grapes of Wrath" will engage students with life-like descriptions of how determination can pay off with hard work and determination. We will, of course, have to watch the film starring a very young Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, the novel's protagonist.

My students love to read.

However, the closest bookstore to our community is 45 minutes away. Your generous donation will make a huge difference in my students' lives by letting them experience, through reading, one of our country's most desperate time periods.
