Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How often do you communicate without technology? We are a digitally expressive world. Schools need to teach students how to engage digitally. Unfortunately, my students live on the wrong side of the digital divide: that chasm between those with access to technology to communicate--and those without.

I teach 4th & 5th grade in a high-poverty, public elementary school in Los Angeles.

Our students' parents are mostly recent immigrants; they wash dishes in restaurants, mow lawns, nanny children. When my students do have access to technology, they consume it: they watch TV, play games, buy songs. Although they live in the shadows of Hollywood, they don’t get a chance to make the movies, games, songs, etc. Five years ago generous supporters at Donors Choose funded a networked laser printer for my classroom. As a result, five years of students learned how to report, design, and publish a bimonthly newspaper to communicate their ideas with their local community. In those five years, though, our world has changed; print is dying, and communication is becoming a digital, global medium. Kids make movies, cartoons, how-to-videos and get a global audience on YouTube. Our kids want to participate in this global conversation, but we don’t have the technological capacity.

My Project

Right now we use my personal Flip camera (awful sound, no tripod, minimal zoom). I’m requesting two filming kits (digital video cameras, tripods, external microphones, hard drives)--one for each participating grade level. Under the guidance of our tech teacher and myself, 4th & 5th grade students will use these resources to produce a monthly broadcast. They'll pitch story ideas, write scripts, storyboard, operate the cameras and mikes, report, interview, anchor, edit in iMovie, and show their finished work to our school, our community (via our school website), and the world (via TeacherTube & YouTube). These resources will enable our students to work in teams to create real product for a real-world audience & get feedback. They'll converse with others in ways that textbooks, workbooks, and standardized tests (which, unfortunately, are so much a part of their daily learning lives) can't match. And they'll get to try it again and again. They'll be excited, proud, and experienced!

Please help our students become Hollywood Reporters!

We promise, no gossip & celebrity sightings but instead we'll bring you The Rock Cycle and Back to School and whatever else the students dream up. Please help us help our students participate in the global YouTubing, Twittering, Garagebanding digital conversation so they can make a bright, creative, valuable place for themselves in the 21st century economy! Thank you
