Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We know that American schoolchildren are learning too little history and often become high school students uninterested in this fascinating subject. I have found a way to change this for my students by incorporating historical fiction into our reading and social-studies programs.

Although my urban 5th graders live in a state that is rich with historical museums and libraries, as children of (often poor) immigrants, they seldom take advantage of such opportunities.

Field trips have been frozen for years due to budget cuts. As a teacher I have worked hard to do something about this, to improve my class' language-arts program by infusing interesting and important background knowledge that will provide a solid foundation for further interest in and study of history. Using a classroom library of (which has grown magnificently thanks to donorschoose.org) maps, atlases, Cd's, documentary films, photography, and art books to supplement monthly novels, students can gain over the course of the year a real understanding of the complexity, suffering, and perhaps the inevitability of war.

My Project

I have identified the American Civil War as one of if not the most important event in our country's history -- one that underlies a wealth of well-written books for children and young people (my students fall right between these two categories). Most people know that the Civil War has been the subject of some of our country's greatest songs, poems, novels, photographs; but too few of my colleagues realize what wonderful books have been published in the last ten or twenty years that explore this era from the different perspectives of Union and Confederate soldiers, women, children, African-Americans. What a marvelous time to be a teacher who knows that meaningful learning of history in a way must incorporate science, cultural history, music, facts, math, and of course geography...and last more than two weeks! Fifth grade is the perfect age to begin to understand some of the real "stories" behind the mere facts and timelines, and to develop a life-long interest in history.

When I began developing this program over two years ago, I read many books for young people about the Civil War: after student experimentation, I have identified a half-dozen superb novels; I have enriched our reading with non-fiction books, photographs, music...but it is difficult getting everything from the public library to keep for any length of time.

I would love to be able to have these wonderful books from September to June, for students to read on their own, and in pairs, for years to come!
