Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture yourself and imagine what it felt like when you took your first photo with your own camera. Some of my students have never experienced taking a "good" photograph. I remind my students that documentary photography is a visual statement that is communicated through their own lens. Life is Art.

My students are between the ages of 16-18 and they range between grades 9 through 12 depending on the credits they have earned.

My students are extremely diverse. I have 5 students that are designated learning disabled from to those with mild to moderate learning disabilities, Emotionally Disturbed, and some who have formerly been in Special Day Classes, confined to one classroom all day. My students have a wide range of learning abilities, most reading below grade level. Each of my students is unique and has various reasons why they are at a continuation high school, but the one thing that unites them all is the desire to learn and to graduate with a high school diploma. For a majority of my students he or she will be the first in their family to graduate from high school. My students are constantly faced with adverse conditions, such as the death of a parent or lack of one, drug addiction, homelessness, gang/turf wars and surviving the foster youth system. My students are resilient.

My Project

My students need five digital cameras so that they can complete their homework assignments and in-class activities to create their community digital stories. We will use the cameras to document and share the personal stories and histories of my students' families and community. They will photograph the good and the bad, owning their insights and applying the photos to a digital story to address social constructs, such as race, gender and class. They will focus on self, family and community and then national and global issues. The camera is a major tool to providing opportunity for meaningful participation. Youth voice and analysis. Research and art. My students need five digital cameras so that they can complete their homework assignments and in-class activities to create their community digital stories. Their interviews will be transformed into narratives and then selected photos will be applied. They will realize that their photos have captured the histories of communities or of their families, they have created another perspective. Learning these foundational elements of photography, the language of photography can be translated from photojournalism to fine art as well. My students will have discovered the countless possibilities of photography and the power of voice. We will listen deeply.

This program prepares them to begin to understand their own personal stories and finding voice.

They begin to become more conscious of the importance of their own voice and the value of revealing stories from their communities through their perspective and not how the media portrays them. We are building on self-worth and illuminating stories of and from youth are so important to tell. Whether or not my students become future photographers, they will have the foundations of photo documentary work.
