My Students

Do you remember the devastation you saw back in January when the massive earthquake hit Haiti? They are still tremendously in need of help! I was given the opportunity to travel and serve in Haiti this summer and want to broaden the eyes of my students of the world with my students through technology.

My second grade students are amazing.

They are from a high poverty area in Northeast Georgia, where the local economy is suffering. They are diligent and enjoy helping others. I want my students to see the world through another classroom's eyes and from a different perspective. I want them to realize how blessed they are to attend an American school with a roof, power, and lunch daily. I want them to develop relationships with children around the world to help them see that Americans are not the only people in the world. I want them to see another culture first hand and help them become more sensitive to the world around them. I want them to become the movers and shakers of the global twenty-first century, and it starts with understanding and relating to others. My students need to see life outside of the small rural town where we live.

My Project

As stated previously, I will use my own personal laptop to communicate with the students in Haiti so this laptop is for the Haitian school, located outside of Gonaives, where I traveled and served this summer. I will ensure this laptop is shipped to the Haitian school/taken by me so that we can bridge two schools, two communities, two countries together in the matter of minutes through the use of Internet and computer technology, along with Skye.

My students would love to be able to communicate with students from 800 miles away in another country. It would broaden their world view and provide them with another way of looking at things through this opportunity. However, this is a greater lesson of giving for my students. Rather than keep the laptop for our own classroom, we will give it to a classroom who so desperately needs it in Haiti in order to build a lasting relationship.
