Yu Can Help Bring Ancient China to Life!

My 40 students need one class set of the book "Graphic Myths and Legends: Yu the Great - Conquering the Flood" to vividly engage them during our study of ancient China.

My Students

Ancient History. The very words cause children (and many adults) to simply yawn. While textbook facts, figures, dates and places do matter, there is certainly a better way for students to learn -- and even enjoy -- exploring the people, cultural achievements, events and places of the distant past.

My students are energetic and curious sixth graders who live in a suburban community rich in local, state and national history.

We are surrounded by wildlife, a large lake and a system of rivers and streams. As a result, many are physically active and eager to explore their world. Unfortunately, many come to my class believing history has no connection to their lives. They are technology savvy and require fast-paced, engaging learning experiences. Due to an emphasis on maintaining high test scores, instructional time devoted to history has dwindled in their elementary schools. My students come to middle school expecting to remain intellectually and academically disengaged in their history classes -- reading directly from the text with no opportunity to explore the intricate and fascinating stories calling to them just beneath the textbook's lackluster surface. My goal is to upset that apple cart and show my students that history isn't only relevant, it's maybe even better than T.V

My Project

Because time travel isn't possible, the next best thing is to design vicarious experiences through literature. The class novels I'm requesting are graphic novels -- a genre that is highly engaging to middle schoolers. The graphic-intensive format is powerful for struggling readers. The embedding of real historical detail into a vivid narrative appeals to all students. Students will enjoy learning history and reading at the same time. This novel,"Yu the Great: Conquering the Flood" recounts an ancient Chinese legend. I will integrate reading lessons about the hero as archetype and the quest as a recurring, dominant mythological theme. Moreover, legends reveal much about the cultural values and daily struggles of the people who generated them. Yu was the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty (2100 BC),a descendant of the king of the gods. He must save his people from great floods. This reflects the historical reality of people whose fate suffered unpredictable currents in an ancient landscape.

A cumbersome textbook filled with sterile details about people long gone must compete with television, video games and the Internet for my students' attention.

"Yu the Great: Conquering the Flood" is a richly illustrated, vividly written account of an ancient Chinese legend. It brings to life the actual struggles the ancient Chinese had with their environment, their views on the origin of their culture and reveals their most treasured values. YOU and "Yu" can help bring ancient China to life!
