Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Why read? There are television shows and movies that are way more interesting and illustrate the best of drama. If I could package that same drama up and put it into a book I could make my students actually want to read. I strongly believe that these novels will do that job!

I teach seventh grade language arts in a rural, low socioeconomic area.

My students are mostly African American or Hispanic, bright, and filled with enthusiasm. They love art projects and listening to music. Unfortunately, they are extremely reluctant to read. When I ask them why they do not like to read, they tell me it is because books are boring. They never can find something that holds their attention. My administrators are extremely open to any novel I want to bring into my classroom, but we have absolutely no instructional money left for supplies.

My Project

I started teaching 10 years ago in a juvenile detention facility. I brought with me a few copies of the novel Forged By Fire, by Sharon Draper. After my students read this book they came to me with such a changed view about reading. They said it was the first book they had ever read, and some of them were 17 years old. Since then, I have been using this book in my classroom, and it continues to bring reluctant readers out of the dark. My copies have since worn thin, and the pages are falling out. I also discovered a new book, Secrets in the Shadows, and last year I read one copy out loud to my class. They begged me to continue the book each day. If they were so interested in hearing this novel, I feel they would be interested in reading it themselves, just as they do Forged by Fire. By implementing these two novels, I will be able to teach the elements of literature (plot, metaphor, flashback, foreshadowing, etc.) and many other elements within my standard curriculum.

Due to the limited amount of copy paper and resources at our school, we use our literature textbooks quite often.

Although, I make it as interesting as possible and add fun activities to my reading lessons, my goal is to get actual books into the hands of children who otherwise wouldn't be caught dead reading on their own. I know from experience that these novels can make that happen. By simply getting my students interested in reading, I feel that more books will follow by DESIRE not force.
