This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every band needs a bass player. This year Making Waves Academy will have a music program for the first time in its three year history. One of the essential instruments that we are seeking for our upcoming school band is an electric bass.

Making Waves Academy is a new public charter middle school located in the under served community of Richmond, Ca.

The majority of our students come from low-income families in a Bay Area city that is notorious for gangs, violence, and under performing schools. At Making Waves Academy, we have an extended school day with a rigorous college preparatory program. Making Waves not only prepares our students academically for college, but also provides all of our students with the financial assistance necessary to pay for it. This year, MWA is enriching our strong academic program with instrumental music electives. Students will have the opportunity to learn an instrument. In addition, we hope to start a school band that will play at our assemblies and school events.

My Project

Having an electric bass in our music room will allow students to learn the instrument and provide the foundation for our school band. This year we are relying on generous donations for our instrumental music program to get off the ground. Having essential instruments like a bass, will enable MWA to have a complete school band which will play at school assemblies and events, and thereby benefit our entire school of 400 students.

Our music program will provide students with a much needed outlet for their creativity and talents.

I know from personal experience the enormous positive influence that music can play in children's lives. Our music program and school band will go a long way toward building community at MWA and enriching our students' lives.
