Perspectives of a Global Issue

My students need the materials to build mobiles that can show help explain global issues.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A picture may be worth a thousand words but the person who painted it has said a million. Constructing the mobiles to help explain global issues will be an activity forever remembered.

My students are 9th graders in an integrated humanities, math, and physics class.

The students' diversity represents our community and we have a higher than average special education population that is fully integrated into all the classes. The school encourages project-based learning and doing hands-on activities in an effort to make the work that is required more authentic. We also take pride in exhibiting our work around our community so that the students have an opportunity for family and friends to see what they are doing in school.

My Project

With these materials my students will construct mobiles that help our audience understand a global issue. For example, how can you show that there are 11.6 million orphans in Africa under the age of 18 whose parents have died of AIDS? One way it could be done is to create a mobile with Africa on one end with a red dot for every 100,000 orphans and an image of a crowded football stadium on the other side with 162 smaller stadiums hanging below it. When a student or any other person sees 162 football stadiums full of people and can imagine they are all orphan children then they can truly understand what a number like 11.6 million really means. Then we can teach what other issues will grow from having such a large amount of orphans in one place as they grow into adulthood. That is one example of 12 global issues we intend to teach with this project.

Our world is getting smaller every year.

Our students need to truly understand the global issues that affect all of us and will continue to for the remainder of our lives. Not only will your donations allow my students to truly understand these issues, the products my students create and the exhibition that will take place after will allow the students to share their knowledge with our community.
