"The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies." -- (Gertrude Jekyll)"The man who has planted a garden feels that he has done something for the good of the world." -- (Vita Sackville-West) I strive to inspire my students in a fun, interactive way by having them plant an amazing garden.

Most of my students live apartment complex and have no idea how food gets to the table.

They don't have lawns for gardening, and there isn't a good space on my school grounds to place a garden, although I have tried unsuccessfully for years, so I will learn and grow with my students (and vegetables) through this project. We spend so much of our time indoors, so this project will give students a greater connection and respect for the earth and how much goes into what is on their plate. We will cook and eat what we grow. Many of my students do not receive proper nutrition at their homes, so they will learn more about how to stay healthy. They always enjoy cooking activities!

My Project

I am hoping for a matching grant from FEED USA. I am requesting a classroom curriculum scientific method resource guide, classroom planting kit, self watering systems, seeds, potting soil and fertilizer. These materials will teach them about healthy living practices. Nutrition education through school gardening will increase children's knowledge about fruits and vegetables and will improve their attitudes towards healthy eating habits. Help us garden together! After we grow vegetables, we'll grow spring flowers. I will share this project with the first grade team, so 100 students will be inspired and learn from this project.

Gardening provides a fun, interactive way to teach and learn healthy eating habits.

Benefits of using gardening to teach nutrition include: Providing a site for hands-on learning and to practice using the scientific method. Exciting children about eating fruits and vegetables that they grew themselves. Teaching students to appreciate how their food is grown (Carrots do not magically appear on grocery store shelves.) Food safety instruction through proper harvesting, processing and storage.
