Holocaust Survivors: Collecting Their Stories

My students need three flip video cameras to record interviews they will be conducting with Holocaust survivors.

My Students

Can you imagine junior high and high school students who LOVE history? That's how it is at our school because of our oral history program. Our students are HISTORIANS who collect stories about history directly from those who witnessed it. We need flip video cameras to record these stories.

Our students are in grades 8-12 and they learn about history by interviewing people.

They have interviewed Hmong immigrants, World War II veterans, Korean War veterans, Gulf War and Iraq veterans, veterans from the Secret Wars for Laos, Wisconsin Native Americans, women from Wisconsin, people from the decades of the 1920s, 1930s, 1950s, and 1960s. The students have actually published seventeen books so far.

My Project

We are really excited about our newest adventure which involves interviewing Holocaust survivors. Over the summer students made contacts with official Holocaust organizations and so far we have over 18 interviews set up with survivors. These interviews will take place this fall during the school year. We currently only have digital recorders (which are great) but we would also like to have video footage so we need several flip video cameras to record the interviews. One survivor from Milwaukee has already agreed to talk with our group and we have the possibility of going to see a Holocaust museum. Students will also spend much class time reading and preparing for these interviews.

History is boring when you read it from a textbook.

Our students have the opportunity to interview Holocaust survivors. These survivors (who were children at the time,) are growing older every day. We want to preserve their stories. More important however is the bond that students often develop with the people they interview. The lessons students learn will be life altering.
