My Students

My students are inner-city, high-poverty, high-mobility fifth graders whose homes are often dysfunctional due to generational poverty. These fifth graders are on the verge of adolescence and all its challenges. They can learn responsibility through taking care of pets: fish, geckos, and butterflies.

My students are mainly African American, but we also serve Caucasian, Native American, and Latino students.

Most of our students live in apartments or trailer parks, and they are often not able to have pets. As these 5th graders approach adolescence, we as their school, must address their future lives as parents. Using living creatures for science, we can help these students learn responsibility, empathy, and good parenting skills through caring for animals.

My Project

We want our students to experience the closeness and responsibility of caring for pets, and these science projects involving caring for geckos, fish, and butterflies will help them learn those skills. The students will learn science through observing and caring for the animals. They will experience the good feelings that come from bonding with another living creature. They will learn responsibility and interconnectedness of all living creatures.

I hope this experience will cause some of these students to choose science as a lifetime interest and career.

I also hope that this experience of caring for smaller, weaker creatures will help them develop stronger parenting skills, so that the cycle of poverty and abuse that many of them experience will end.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
