My Students

Never before have I been so amazed by the love for a book than I saw displayed for the book The Hunger Games. I would like for my students to be able to expand their love for this story by being able to complete the trilogy for them. Avid readers as well as reluctant devoured this powerful read.

My students attend a suburban school district.

They range in ability from gifted to special education. One thing that binds them is the love of a good story. Currently with the budgetary problems in our area, we have not been able to purchase any new instructional materials for this school year. I would love to be able to provide them with these books to spark their love of reading this year.

My Project

I am requesting copies of Catching Fire and Mockingjay, the second and third books in the Hunger Games trilogy. This would allow students to complete the entire series of books. These books have such rich content, that is is possible to use them to teach many of the state language arts standards using their content. Some of the standards to be taught are the use of propaganda, the plot development, characterization, fact and opinion, writing skills, and point of view. Students complete projects in language arts that are supplemented by their art and social studies classes as well. Last year, with the first book in the series, an entire grading period's worth of skills were incorporated into the single text. I would like to give students the opportunity to master those skills and more with the other two books. Putting high interest literature in the hands of a middle schooler has the potential to unlock past negative experiences with reading and potentially create new book lovers

Reading is often not an activity that teens make a priority. Putting high quality literature in a student's hand unlocks an activity that may not have seemed attractive before. Books are power!
