This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fifty young musicians carrying their instruments, music, and big black music stands into the community nursing homes several time a year. They are exhausted before we even arrive.

The young musicians are a wonderful group of students ages 10-14.

They reside in an urban district in NJ. Many get to school at 7:30AM to practice and receive extra help. All play because they love it and love sharing their music with their friends, family, and community. The school is a pre-K - 8th and is a 504 school. All students in the school have the opportunity to participate in the instrumental program.

My Project

Several times a year I take the young musicians - orchestra and band - on the road. They perform at the AIDS hospital and nursing home across the street from the school. They are also invited to perform at various functions around the city - fundraisers, other schools, meetings, graduations, and festivals. They work tremendously hard in preparation for these performances - usually coming in early, staying after, or giving up recess. The big stands that they have been traveling with are very heavy (most of my musicians are on the smaller side) and are getting destroyed by all of this travel. Folding music stands will make our travel days easier and safer. The instrument stands will help preserve the instruments.

These stands will make the students more independent, giving them the opportunity to feel like a "gigging" musician - prepared, self sufficient, professional.

Within the program they learn how to carry themselves, how to behave on stage, how to play and perform music from many different cultures, how to prepare, etc. Being able to carry ones own stand and set up just takes them to the next level of playing the part and seeing another option for their lives.
