My Students

I have watched it happen so many times, the student and the book, united by some common bond that I cannot fully explain or understand.

Once the suggestion slips off my tongue, the book from my hand, I watch the process unfold. The eager student hurries back to her spot on the worn red carpet to investigate a copy of Brain Jacques latest book she found in the classroom library. Then, on another morning, it is the reluctant reader who is captured, the one who sits with a different book open each day, not reading, just sitting and watching the other readers, but on this day I hand him a worn copy of Gary Soto’s Local News, mentioning that the first short story in the book made me laugh out loud. This student, who never reads, cannot stop reading, and when the bell rings, he does not even seem to notice. I have to gently remind him that he needs to move on to his next class.

My Project

One afternoon, I read aloud from the Grimm Fairy tales and a discussion follows about the way Disney has forever changed student perceptions about Cinderella, Snow White, and others. On this winter day, it is the class clown who wanders off to the school library, checks out a copy of the fairy tales, and falls into the tales woven so long ago by the Brothers Grimm. Somehow, together, we have created during our sustained silent reading time a kind of magic time, a time when we escape into the different worlds created by the authors whose words we read. In my experience, this has been the catalyst for positive change. Too many reluctant readers to count have been changed into readers, albeit not always avid readers, but readers none-the-less, with this approach. Along the way these readers have improved not only their reading skills but also their writing abilities.

Students learn, through books, more than I can ever hope to teach them, and in giving students the time and space just to read, my intent is to encourage that process beyond the boundaries of our time together.

My students need 75 high interest young adult books to re-invigorate their choices for reading in the classroom library. The end goal, I hope, of any educational establishment is to create thinkers who read, write, and question deeply.
