My Students

There is a need to engage students who feel frustrated with reading. By using high interest reading with numerous hands-on activities this course is designed to promote reading, critical thinking, and teamwork.

We live in a rural area where many of the students I have taught feel that reading has no purpose in their life.

I want to take many of these kids where they are (many fans of hunting and fishing) and expose them to SURVIVAL STORIES that I know they will enjoy. I want this to be a HANDS-ON english class! I am ready to MOTIVATE and INSPIRE!

My Project

Camping and Wilderness Survival by Paul Tawrell is a text that I have used many times to hone my outdoor skills. As an Eagle Scout I know the importance of preparation. This book will serve a vital role in preparing these students for their own outdoor adventures.

From building a makeshift shelter, to creating a cold-weather survival kit, students will have a hands-on understanding of some of the skills it takes to survive in the outdoors.

Students will journal in response to the stories they will read and will be assigned a variety of high-interest projects to demonstrate critical thinking and teamwork. This text will be a vital "HOW-TO" book for the class.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
