Geek Society

My students need an introductory silkscreen kit so they can express/practice their art and use it to make custom shirts to help the club fund-raise.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Pablo Picasso said ‘Art washes away from the soul the dirt of everyday life’ and this resonates with the me and my students. They are inner city students with access to very little. Art is an outlet for them to "escape" their lives for a while.

These are inner city high school students with access to little to no arts due to massive budget cuts.

This high school is 85% Hispanic and approximately 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. These kids are the school's Geeks, the art nerds and have become role models in our school through the Geek Society and by hosting our monthly Geek Fests. These students are looking for a sense of belonging and they find "family" in the Geek Society.

My Project

Last year these students hosted monthly Geek Fests that brought our entire school together. Over half of our school showed up for these events that involved organizing art rooms, spoken word, video games and music. These were expensive to run and by providing this arts club, The GEEK SOCIETY, with silk screen materials students will be allowed to practice their art and become more self sufficient by selling shirts as fund- raising. This self sufficiency would allow for more of our extra activities, which invites artists for guest instruction and the materials needed. Travel to city wide art events; theater, dance, and, museums etc.

These kids are some of the most artistic, responsible and amazing students I have ever worked with.

They now have an outlet for their creativity. They are working so hard to fund the GEEK Fests, which the school loves, however their own activities were lessened because of this. These students are getting by, their expectations, through experience, are low. I would love to be able to provide a way for them to be self sufficient, build this club and to give them a sense of authentic ownership.
