I Don't Have a Favorite Book

My students need and want books that will interest, intrigue, and motivate them to want to read instead of watching TV or playing computer games all day.

My Students

"I don't have a favorite book" was the first statement I heard upon arriving at my new school. The second was "I've read everything here in this library". Two boys at opposite ends of the spectrum and it is up to me to meet both of their needs. My boys need books!

These boys are 6th-8th grade level.

We live in a rural area without much access to major stores. The school and public library are the only way most students are exposed to books. This is a small school library with a lot of old and outdated books. This middle school does an outstanding job of educating students. In fact, they are one of a few that made AYP this year. But boys will be boys and if they don't have something great to read, they will favor TV, Nintendo, and x-box.

My Project

I am requesting one of the hottest series of books for kids, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I am also requesting world record books. Lots on boys will spend hours devouring these types of books when they won't pick up a chapter book. I am also requesting some animal books that students have asked for.

By middle school, if a student has not developed a love of reading, the chances are slim that it will ever happen.

Students also know when their needs are being met and for some, they realize that this small library doesn't have what they want. Getting new books into our media center will help current and future students. As the media specialist, I try to motivate kids to love reading, but I need to have good books to put into their hands! Please help me to get my boys reading!
