Changing Life Paths

My students need a classroom set of the book "The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates" by Wes Moore.

My Students

My students are trying to get ready to "read the world." This is a book that will inspire them and increase their literacy skills.

My students struggle with reading, but work really hard.

They live in a neighborhood where there are constant temptations into drug and gang life. In order to inspire them to not only believe in their education, but to do their work, they challenge me to prove the relevancy and importance of graduation, education, and literacy.

My Project

Wes Moore, the author of the book, was declared a Rhodes Scholar on the same day that someone with the same name was sentenced to life in prison. Sometimes my students are convinced that because they are inner-city students, they cannot do anything but live in the inner city. I want to use Wes Moore's story to inspire my students and help with their literacy levels!

This book will help my students see that the outcome of their lives will be determined by the choices they make and not the neighborhood from where they come.

It is relevant to the things they see in life each day with a powerful and uplifting message!
