My Students

Tired of boring text books? It’s time to bring some excitement back into reading. I teach second grade at a Title One School where 90 percent of the children are on free or reduced lunch. I am constantly trying to find ways to hook the kids into reading.

I was blessed this year with a group of students that genuinely enjoys reading.

I am trying hard to help keep this momentum going. I am trying to find books on subjects that they are interested in. I am also trying to find more non fiction selections that are on their reading level.

My Project

I would like to purchase a class set of Weekly Readers. They will receive 32 issues throughout the year. These readers have colorful photographs. They are written on a second grade level so that the students can feel successful when reading them. They come with a teacher guide to help integrate them into our other core subjects. These magazines include maps, charts and graphs to help work on their critical thinking skills. They also have a character education cartoon to help start classroom discussions. It comes with five full color posters that we can display in our classroom. It also includes three reading assessment tests. Finally it comes with a Bonus Election kit with an activity booklet to help teach my children about the upcoming election. These readers would be incorporated into our small group and whole group reading times. They are a great way to integrate social studies and science with reading.

These Weekly Readers will be another way to help engage my students in their reading.

It will help them make connections between reading and science and social studies. By purchasing the Weekly Readers you will help my students develop a love for reading and help them on their road to becoming life long readers. This will help them realize that reading is something they can do for fun.
