Theatre is Life: Connecting Students to Their Environment

My students need a copy machine in the room in order to make copies of scenes and monologues for their projects, and to scan their artwork into the computer.

My Students

"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being," said Oscar Wilde. This quotes illustrates why I teach theatre; to teach students people skills and self-awareness.

My students are of low socioeconomic status in New York.

They attend a public high school that is alternative to the main high school in the area. This school lends itself to two types of students; those choosing a vocation and those with behavior and attendance problems. My class is new to the school. Through theatre activities, such as role-playing, scene work and creative writing, my goal is to teach them respect for one another. I will be doing trust building activities, and they will be required to take a lot of risks in my classroom. Respect and trust are two qualities that do not come naturally to many of my students. My class is required for all ninth grade students, some coming from middle school, some repeating their ninth grade year for the second or third time. My class is an unconventional one, and a wonderful opportunity for students to experience each other, and the world, in a new and unexpected way.

My Project

My request is one of practicality. My class is new to the school and I do not have the supplies I need to run it smoothly. I will be working on scenes with my students, which requires them, all one-hundred and twenty of them, to have their own copy. They will be expected to analyze and memorize their scenes, which means they will have to take their copies home. In my experience, students often forget to bring what they need to class. I could have fifteen out of twenty-five students forget their scene for the day, and I do not have a copy machine. That means I would have to send them all, one at a time, to the office to make a copy. My classes are only forty-five minutes, so this would severely cut into my teaching time. If there is a copy machine in the classroom they have no excuse not to work. I will be able to avoid them roaming through the halls to use the copy machine in the office. This will help my students to learn responsibility, and will help me to maintain control of the classroom.

Donations to my request will make a huge difference to my students and myself.

Having a copy machine allows me to keep my students in my classroom, an essential part to the building of trust and connectedness. If my students know that they can "forget" their scene and wander the halls, many of them will do just that. I desperately want to avoid this! For me to successfully teach them what I believe will truly help them in life, I need to keep them in the room. Thank you for your help!!!
