This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Could you imagine not having novels to read as a class in middle school? Could you imagine taking a two mile walking class field trip every three weeks in order to check out books from the public library because you really wanted to read?

My students are inner-city Maryland students who are mainly from immigrant backgrounds.

Our student body mainly is Greek and Latin American but also Eastern European, Asian, African, Middle Eastern and Pacific Islander. In fact, most immigrant students from all over the city are sent to our elementary/ middle school. My students come from hard working families that often have very little. 98% of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch but many of the proud families refuse to take it.

My Project

Having a novel to read as a class would be inspirational for my students! Moreover, the students researched and voted on the book they most wanted to read and Lupita Manana, the story of a young 13 year old illegal immigrant, was one of the favorites among students.

By the time students are at a middle school age, it is crucial for their literary development that they read novels and not only short stories.

By having a novel to read as a class, we could further develop class discussions and literary and vocabulary skills.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
