I've Already Read This!

My students need a wide variety of reading materials at their reading level and a checkout cart.

My Students

What do you do when you try something over and over and you continuously fail? You give up, right? Well, that is exactly what happens to too many of my students when it comes to reading. They think they cannot do it, so they quit trying!

I teach 6th grade in an inner-city school with children from very low-income families.

For many students their education has never been a top priority and this has caused them to fall behind in their learning. Year after year I have students that are reading well below grade level and all of the materials we offer are too difficult.

My Project

This year our school adopted a new approach to teaching reading called Balanced Literacy. Balanced Literacy has great success in raising achievement levels in reading across the nation. In order to ensure success of all of my students I need to provide a variety of reading material and a wide variety of levels, genres, and topics. As we all know, reading is an important part of our daily lives. In one way or another all of our learning revolves around some form of reading. It is essential that my students raise their reading levels and the best way to make this happen is to provide books that are "Just Right" for them. I have requested sets of books at different levels, genres, and interests.

My vision for this new program is to have students reading, discussing, and most of all enjoying books!

I can accomplish this by providing opportunities and materials for all of my students to feel successful in reading. By contributing to this project you will help my students become excited about reading and truly understand the joy that comes from it. By providing books that are on the students' level we will make an impact in all of their future learning.
