From Farm to Food: Bringing Agriculture to the Classroom

My students need plant science materials to explore the plant growing cycle, including fast plants kits, a growing light, a diagram flip chart and 6 literature books.

My Students

Do you know what farm products are all in just one cookie? Here is the ingredient list needed: Recipe: 11 hungry Vermont cows 2 stalks Hawaiian grass 1 tsp Madagascar flower seeds 2 days of hard work from a New Hampshire hen 1 tsp Pacific Ocean 1 tsp dried up Wyoming Lake 2 ¼ cups of Kansas field

My third grade students live in a rural community, yet I am surprised at the lack of farming knowledge they have.

When shown this recipe of all the ingredients needed from all over the world need for just one cookie, they are shocked. My students attend school in a rural midwest area that is growing geniuses from an impoverished, high need community. Our school has earned status as a National Blue Ribbon school and achieves standard of excellence every year. The next great agriculture specialist is sitting in my class this year, I am certain of it! I desperately want to foster his or her love for plant science by enriching my curriculum with additional science materials. Our school, like others, is dealing with major budget cuts, so additional enrichment supplies are extremely limited. With the need to preserve our farmland and farming industry, the education of our youth is critical. I've taken graduate classes to encourage more agriculture in the classroom and need supplies.

My Project

We spend a good portion of our science curriculum on plant science. Some examples of choices I am requesting include supplies reccomended by my graduate class in agriculture. I have selected Fast Plants kits to learn the life cycles of plants and provide comparative data about plant species. To enhance the succcess of these kits, we also need a growing light. These hands-on materials will allow students deeper engagement with the topic areas. Students are especially excited about the prospect of growing environments within the classroom through the cold winter months. We currently are engaged in outdoor gardening projects and want to continue the learning when it freezes outside! I also integrate several of my scence topics across the curriculum into other subject areas. I have chosen 6 literature selections to carry over into reading. I have chosen both narrative and expository books to supplement the plant science activities,

We all count on agriculture to feed our families.

Through my classes I have learned the broad impact that the farming industry has on all of our daily lives. The purpose of my requests are to demonstrate to students the broad range of the impact of agriculture in our everyday life. They will begin by identifying the contributions farmers give with products for just a simple chocolate chip cookie. This will lead into plant science and growth activities that continue year round.
