My Students

Middle School students are in an unique phase in life, and a very difficult phase! Finding engaging curriculum can be a challenge, but technology has opened doors for reaching these students that has never existed before. Currently, the lab does not support projects the students need and deserve.

Our middle school is currently a Title I targeted school; more than 60% of our student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch.

Access to technology is limited for most of them, and often school is the only place they learn to operate in virtual environments and be responsible digital citizens. These students often return to school in the fall excited for the two guaranteed meals a day, and the heat in the building during our cold winters. More than most, these students need to engage with learning because they have little encouragement at home to do so. When excited about learning, our students can create remarkable projects and lunge head first into innovative creations. The students of our middle School have the drive and passion for amazing productions, but many have limited access for such imagination and creation outside of our brick walls.

My Project

In the beginning of each year, my students compose biographies of a classmate in order to become acquainted with their new cohorts. In the past, this project has been an interview via paper and pencil followed by a five paragraph essay also completed on paper. This year, we'd like to mix it up a little, and utilize real-world tools for our project. With access to additional, higher-processing netbooks, our class will be able to complete interviews via a class blogging site, listen to NPR examples of interviews and audio biographies, and use digital cameras to capture images that exemplify the personality of each subject! The previous class graciously pushed for old digital cameras for use in our classroom, so all we are missing is somewhere to upload our pictures for the project. Each written biography of a classmate will be illuminated in picture slides. The goal will be to produce a clear biography using a limited number of words. Pictures, after all, are worth thousands!

The biographies have been only moderately received in the past, but it is a powerful project for breaking down walls of uncertainty with one another.

Using the language in which these students already function- technology- these biographies will come to life for the students. Learning cannot be achieved without engagement, and engagement can only be gained when there is application. Students see the application and value of learning how to navigate and manipulate a computer.
