My Students

Help us create a unique classroom community that celebrates and respects our differences, yet helps us appreciate how we are the same. This team building ART project will help us START to become SMART about who we are, and motivate students to become SMARTER in reading, writing, and math.

My 24 third graders, attend an urban public school with moderate poverty.

Boasting one of the most diverse populations in our state are students representing a variety of racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. My class will include several English Language Learners and some students with other special needs. These highly active third graders sometimes need extra help getting along, and motivation for learning. They will have an opportunity to learn who they are individually, and who they can become collectively. We hope to bind ourselves as a team, yet recognize our differences. We will enlist the help of high school mentors from Art and English classes to connect with students, model manners, mentor them in art skills of design and planning, and help them accomplish their academic goals in reading, writing, and math.

My Project

I have requested foam boards, paints, and brushes for each student. Third graders, partnered with high school mentors, will outline each student's body and cut out the foam board. Then they will plan and implement abstract designs with paints. Next, third graders will be guided to correctly use measuring tools to report height, width, foot size, and arm span. High School English students will partner with students to use their body cutouts as motivation for their writing projects. These include: writing complete sentences to create riddles about who they are, creating biography poems, listing our "Books We Read", writing Valentine poems, and enlivening the classroom atmosphere with our homemade superheroes and the fiction stories we create about them. Learning from master artists of public art in our community, and older students from our high school, we will create a fun learning atmosphere, that feels personable, yet has very high standards for math, reading, and writing

Your donations will fund a memorable project that will help third graders have a love of learning and will be able to remember what they learned for the rest of their lives.

How better to learn about measuring than to measure ourselves? How better to learn about complete sentences than by writing riddles about ourselves? How better to write poetry and fiction than by imagining ourselves as the main characters. There is no better motivation for a third grader. You get to make a difference
