Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 6th grade students have been housed in an elementary school building for the past 2 years due to funding shortfalls in Florida. Due to this, my students do not have access to a middle school library. My classes have trouble finding information and books on topics related to world geography.

The community is made up of primarily Hispanic migrant farm workers and Haitian immigrants.

English is not the 1st language out here, and the population is 99% classified as economically disadvantaged. The students have been growing academically for the past few years, but because they come to school with so little background knowledge and "normal" childhood experiences, they are way behind the other schools in the district. They are good kids who have rough homelives and if I can make a difference by opening up the world to them, then I know they will be better off in the long run. Most of the students are eager to learn and they love being in school because it gives them a stable place to be everyday. Some kids that attend this school only eat when they are here. Our school participates in a summer food program that gives free meals to kids under 18 and their families during summer break. They could use your help.

My Project

With these books, my students will be able to connect with a real person from the time of the second world war. It will provide a chance for my students to connect to a life of a young girl who is so much different than themselves. The resources will provide a gateway of understanding that people of all races and religions have had trials and obstacles to overcome in their pursuit of freedom and happiness.

My students have no idea about U.S.

history, never mind European historical events. These resources will be used for many years to come and will provide a way to educate the next generation of past mistakes so they will not be repeated in the future.
