"A new technology does not merely add something; it changes everything." - Neil Postman . This year students will be invited to bring their mobile technology into the classroom enabling our classroom to enter the 21st century. But what about students who can't afford an iphone? We need your help!
For the past 5 years I have had the privilege of teaching an amazing group of 6-8th grade middle school gifted and enrichment students.
Our curriculum is based around giving students the opportunities to explore and work on projects they are passionate about. Last year we had essay contest winners, math champions and even a student designed experiment performed on the International Space Station!
Simply put, my students live and breath technology. Offering them a 20th century pen and paper isn't enough. Mobile technology transforms lessons for these students. Notes in a spiral notebook? That worked for me, but this generation of students take notes on a iphone and we see children who never turn in homework showing off their picture perfect assignments to administrators in the hallways. While some do have mobile technology they can bring with them, many do not have the means to purchase these tools. We hope to fill these holes with the resources from this project.
My Project
We are requesting 3 ipod Touch units. This will allow students to have all the amazing resources of an iphone without the monthly bill. Students will use these tools to conduct research, solve complex problems, take notes and step outside of that the traditional classroom can offer with the click of a button.
Our profile picture shows a still picture of a claymation video students created last year bringing their books to life. This year I can envision students uploading these videos to their ipods and showing them off to friends further spreading the impact of reading in our classroom.
These ipods are the beginning of something very special for our students.
Learning will be transformed forever with the use of mobile technology. Their ability to interact with the curriculum and bring subjects to live through genuine research and problem solving will benefit students in our class for years to come.
