My Students

Schools are expecting parents to purchase more and more supplies because of budget cuts. I have added a sketchbook to that list. Many of my students cannot afford a personal sketchbook. I feel it is important to show evidence of growth, and doing so in a sketchbook is a great way.

My students are art students in middle school.

They are in 6th, 7th and 8th grade art. Our school works very hard to engage our students in hands on projects in every classroom. Students feel that what they are learning will impact what they will use in life everyday. Our school is in a small Iowa town that is about one or two hours from a larger city. Our school has about 350 students. Students need to purchase a sketchbook for art class every year and the supply list is getting larger each year. Many find it hard to buy a sketchbook for art. It would help many parents if they did not have to add this to their list.

My Project

I use sketchbooks in each grade level for art class. I like to have students use them in 6th and 7th grade art as a journal at the beginning of each class. I have a theme and have the students write about that theme and include one drawing to go with it. This helps students brainstorm and problem solve for each project. Students draw pre-sketches and complete evaluations in their sketchbooks. I feel that the students like to have their own sketchbook that is personal and a special place to express their thoughts and feelings like a diary. They learn to record these ideas and feelings, and each week they show growth in learning, art, and artist ability. At the end of the year they have sketchbooks to share as evidence of their learning and growth for the whole year.

When students are given a new sketchbook and a real drawing pencil it is like Christmas for many students.

When given materials of their own they tend to treat that gift with respect. By providing my students with their own sketchbook it saves the school and the parents money. It creates an opportunity for students to take their book to other classes, home, and stimulates them to use art in more than in art class. It helps me when they need to turn projects in.
