Just Right Dictionaries

My students need dictionary sets to use in the library, one set of 12 for grades K-2 and another set of 12 for grades 3-5.

My Students

In our library, we have one class set of dictionaries, and it is geared toward the 3rd grade curriculum...of 1999. Imagine the frustration when both 1st and 5th graders have to use the same dictionary set. Too advanced for one, too simple for the other. With zero book budget this year, we need help!

The 400 students in my Title I, PK-5 urban elementary school in Oklahoma, love the library, but few have their own books at home, not to mention a current student dictionary on their level.

Giving access to age-appropriate reference and reading materials is one of my jobs as library media specialist. Our kids deserve to have dictionaries that are appropriate to their age and reading level. Frustration levels rise when the dictionaries they use in our library are too big and advanced, or too easy and don't include the words students need to look up for their assignments.

My Project

One size does not fit all in a PK-5 school library. Our students need to start learning how to use the dictionary in 1st and 2nd grades. The Merriam Websters Primary Dictionary will be the perfect starter dictionary for our younger students. The American Heritage Children's Dictionary will give our 4th and 5th graders the more advanced reference source they need to help them build their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Providing access to more age-appropriate dictionaries will allow my students to have more successful learning experiences with reference and research materials.

Our students will have greater success using reference materials that are geared toward their age and abilities.

Success with using a dictionary when they are young will encourage them to keep using reference materials to expand their vocabulary and learning. Multiple copies of dictionaries will give kids more access and accommodation for their different learning styles and abilities.
