My Students

Watching yourself on video is one of the most effective ways to learn. From improving behavior to performing, and exposing parents to their scholar's education, flip cameras will profoundly benefit my classroom.

I work for the first and only all-girls Public Charter School in Washington, DC.

This area of DC is the home of DC's lowest performing public schools and is the most impoverished corner of DC. Nevertheless, the girls that attend this school are incredibly mature, clever, and forward-looking to college. Our school's mission is to provide pre-school though eighth grade girls a highly rigorous academic program and enrichment opportunities to prepare them to succeed in high school and college and to develop the skills and confidence they need to make healthy, positive lifestyle choices. And let me tell you, these girls are on their way to college! My classroom will be the home of 25 Kindergarten girls, most of whom attended the preschool and pre-kindergarten program that the school offers. Each classroom in the school is named after a university. My classroom will be "Boston University" this year as that is my Alma Mater.

My Project

It would be an invaluable resource if my Kindergarten classroom could have two flip cameras. These cameras will be used not only by the teachers but also by the students. They are incredibly easy to use because they only have one button (stop and record). Students can use these to record their oral stories in writing class and I can transcribe their stories. Students will record their wonderful work in an activity and we can analyze what we did well as a class. Likewise, if we struggled one day, we can discuss how we will improve. When a student has made or performed something in class they are proud of and want to share with their parents, or school community, recording on these easy-to-use cameras would be perfect. When the scholars want to extend their knowledge beyond the classroom, they can send videos of proposals, presentations, and projects to leaders, and contacts in other countries. These are samples of how these will be used in my class, but honestly, the list is endless!

This is your chance to help these scholars learn in the most effective way possible, by seeing themselves and how they can be better scholars.

Give these girls the confidence and opportunity they need to make an impact on behalf of their community. Let them be the the leaders of change!
