Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The work of the doctor will, in the future, be ever more that of an educator, and ever less that of a man who treats ailments."-A quote from Lord Horder, who was a famous British physician who advocated the importance of education for medical students, the same as our school's science curriculum.

Our students are a group of very eager Hispanic and African American pre-Kindergarten through grade 8 kids attending an inner-city bilingual public elementary school.

Almost all of our students come from low-income households, with most parents having earned less than a high school education. We strive to practice learning experiences that will inevitably inspire all of our students to not only graduate high school, but to pursue college as a part of their long-term goals. Despite having students living in gang infested neighborhoods, with around a 50% dropout rate in our city's high schools, and learning in two languages (Spanish and English), our school has been extremely successful at guiding our students into some of the best college-prep high schools in our city. Many of our students continue on to be the first members of their families to graduate with a college degree, and many are now pursing degrees in various areas of Science.

My Project

These materials will help ensure that our students are more excited about studying science as they continue on in high school and college. Medicine is one career path that is increasingly in high demand, and with our 7th grade students teaching microbiology through the spread of bacteria and other pathogens with these materials at our school, our students will be inspired to be the next doctors, nurses, crime scene investigators, geneticists, etc. They will teach the younger kids the importance of good hygiene and how to study microorganisms under the microscope, thus laying the foundation for some future teachers as well. The students will also conduct these exciting investigations with the support of medical professionals and students from a local medical university and hospital, as well as members of our state police forensics unit. This will allow the students opportunities to learn from the "horses mouth" how these exercises relate to real life, not just "as seen on T.V."

Your support in funding this proposal will help ensure that our inner-city minority students will continue to experience authentic, challenging, cooperative, meaningful, and last but not least fun science learning in the same manner as kids from more fortunate suburban schools.

The collaborative component of working alongside actual medical professionals from our local area will inspire our students even further to see themselves as doing the same type of work and achieving a college education.
