My Students

Teenagers face a barrage of media hype glamorizing sexual relations, from MTV to teen magazines. The consequences of teen sex are all too common, with pregnancy often an unintended outcome. I would like to help my students become more aware of the the long-term implications of teen pregnancy.

I teach several sections of a high school Child Development class.

The course is an elective, which means students choose to enroll in the course. I've found that many of them are fascinated with the concept of pregnancy, and often have misconceptions regarding what actually occurs during pregnancy. Some students may have friends and family who have had babies, while others have a minimal understanding. I never fail to be surprised by their lack of understanding of the realities of pregnancy. Some of my students actually believe pregnancy to be a type of "reward" or status symbol, without regard for the consequence of the pregnancy -- a baby. The students who attend my high school are primarily from middle to lower middle class families, and many of them are from single parent homes. Some of them are actually children of single mothers themselves and have never had fathers in their lives.

My Project

I am requesting an Empathy Belly Pregnancy Simulator which will allow students to feel over twenty symptoms and effects of pregnancy. Some of the real-life experiences will include a weight gain of over thirty pounds and pressure on their bladder. They will also experience postural changes in their backs causing a shift in their center of gravity. They will even experience mild fetal kicking "movements."

The Center for Disease control reports that one-third of girls get pregnant before the age of 20.

Sometimes teenagers see their peers who have had a baby and get a false impression about how difficult and life-changing the experience actually is. My goal is that the Empathy Belly will aid as a stepping stone to discuss the realities associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and caring for an infant. I want all of my students to have a better understanding of the consequences of their actions.
