My Students

What kind of reading classroom has a bookshelf that looks empty like this? "Pathetic" is one of our vocabulary words this year; no doubt you'll agree that it could be used aptly to describe our bookshelf.

Our school prepares each student for college.

(Four out of five will be the first in their families to attend college.) Some of our students arrive reading at a Second Grade level; others arrive as very talented readers. Our job is to make sure they've all got good books in their hands. (Readers with empty hands is also a pathetic sight.)

My Project

I am requesting 18 books such as "Bang!", "Looking for Alaska" and "Dairy Queen". My students need to fill their classroom bookshelf with challenging, engaging independent reading books. Childrens librarians have vouched for these books, and with good reason. They're the sort of books that you don't need to coax a child to open. They have intriguing stories, they compel the reader to engage and respond, and they get passed around among friends. (Filling bookshelves is the very least of what they do!)

As a reading teacher, my job is to make sure that my students have good books to read independently at all times.
