My Students

Do you remember being in a high school math class? Many may remember wishing for something other than lectures and written assignments. I am attempting to make math hands-on along with the lectures and written assignments.

My students are extraordinary, energetic individuals wanting knowledge.

They are students with various needs and learning capabilities. Sports, agriculture, and academics are their top school-related priorities. I teach at a pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade public school where there are approximately 300 students. The school is a "high-needs" school with most of our students receiving free or reduced priced lunches. I am THE math department; the one and only math teacher at the junior high and high school levels.

My Project

I am requesting a laminator, laminator sheets, index cards, baggies, and plastic containers for my classroom. My wish is to create hands-on activities for my students. I will use the index cards to make several different types of manipulatives for my classes. One manipulate set is for an activity called Integer Flip. This activity will reinforce addition, subtraction, and multiplication of integers. Other ideas are in mind for many of my classes. I want these manipulatives to last, hence, the request for a laminator. The manipulatives will be laminated. The baggies will be used to store one set of manipulatives per student. All of the manipulatives for one activity will be stored in a plastic container. It will be wonderful having all of the activity’s resources together in the plastic container.

We, you and I, will be working together, teaching students about math.

You will be giving them the materials and I will be providing the know-how. We will be providing math in a hands-on way, a method that most students learn best.
