Research on the Run!

My 36 students each need a flash drive to be able to save their science work, including their research and work for their regional science fair projects.

My Students

"Oh no, I lost all my work!!" Have you ever spoken those words after putting in hours of work on a project on your computer, only to have no place to save it? My students need mobile storage on which they can save their science work and research to take from school to home and back.

My students are sixth grade gifted science students.

Most are highly motivated students who are developing independent research skills. Although they are members of the gifted science classes, they attend a middle school of approximately 1,000 students with a high population of students on free or reduced lunch. For most of my students, this will be the first time they have been in a challenge classroom. My job as teacher will be that of facilitator, to guide them as they investigate, research, and discover the many wonders of the scientific world. Most of their work will center around hands-on group work and independent research. My goal is to not only have them leave at the end of the year with a gained wealth of scientific knowledge, but to have them as excited about the field of science as I am.

My Project

The students in my science classes will learn by doing. They will be doing labs. They will be doing investigations. They will be doing research. They will be doing reporting. The students in my science classes will need somewhere to store all the information they will be accumulating throughout the school year, including research for a 13-page typed research paper that will accompany their required regional science fair project. While some of my students will have access to computers outside the classroom, for most of them, their research and work will take place on classroom computers and in the school computer labs. Flash drives, that will be signed out to students needing them, will not only allow the students to save their work at one place, but will also also them to take their work with them - to work at home, at a relative's or friend's home, at the public library, etc.

While flash drives aren't very "flashy", they are a much needed tool for the students in my science classes to store the information they will be researching and accumulating throughout the school year.

Fortunately, they are reusable, and will be used by future students of my science classes. Students of today are technologically driven. The work they submit is researched and composed on computers. They also need to be able to have a personal place to save their this work.
