My Students

Do you remember being read to when you were a child? I remember getting in bed each night and reading a book with my mom or dad, before I settled in for the night. Reading was such an enjoyable and comforting experience.

I was lucky to have a homemaker for a mother, and a father who worked regular daytime hours, so he was able to be home when I returned from school.

My students are not so fortunate. Most are raised by only one parent who works several jobs. My students spend more time between school and at before and after school programs than they do at home! It is no surprise that it is difficult for them to associate reading as a relaxing and enjoyable experience. They rarely have the opportunity to enjoy books in the comfort of their own homes, and/or with a loving and caring adult. When my students come to school, I try to instill in them a love for reading, but it is difficult to help them find comfort in reading in a school with hard chairs, hard desks, hard floors, and gray walls. I want to add color, softness, and comfort to my classroom.

My Project

I am requesting oversized animal floor cushions for my classroom library. I want my students to be able to cuddle up and get comfy when they read books. I want reading to become something that is relaxing and enjoyable. When my students think about reading, I want them to conjure up feelings of warmth and happiness... not memories of hard desks and chairs, and phonics drills! I want my students to develop a lifelong love for reading books and for learning, and I feel the best way to do that is to teach them in an environment that they can love.
