Science-ology with Books and Newspapers

My students need science library sets and 40 subscriptions to Current Events magazine to compliment and bring enthusiasm to what we are learning in fourth grade science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come with a love of science, a willingness to learn and grow, but our school doesn't have materials that it takes to foster that enthusiasm and create life long learners who will be tomorrow's leaders.

These fourth graders are inner city children without the advantages many of us had as children.

They do possess a natural curiosity, the ability to achieve anything and a spark of interest. I want to foster these children into learners who can look at their world and begin to understand the "why and how" things work and fit together. Too many of our children view the world as one random event after another. It is my hope by explaining the scientific interrelationship between organisms, I can open a new way of thinking and wondering to these young minds. This is one way of changing the belief that life is only about survival --there is a beautiful network of science that fits together and supports our lives.

My Project

I have requested two basic resources to help these students become scientists with an understanding that life is not always random. First, a Weekly Reader magazine for each student to read, study, discuss and take home to share with their family members. Children this age cherish being able to "own" a newspaper, and reread it over and over. It is difficult to find a quality, 4th grade current events newspaper that leads to class discussions, debates, opinions being shared, questions for parents etc. The other part of this request is a specific set of reference books for each of the themes we learn in science. These specific books will be an invaluable resource to expand our curriculum since our science books are at least 12 yrs. old. It is my plan to teach the book and then leave it available to the students to revisit many times. These books will support our science for years to come, as we have very few force, matter, energy & earth books on our campus.

Force, matter, energy, motion and earth are all difficult concepts to teach without colorful, well written books to grab their attention.

The Weekly Reader will support these concepts by showing students these concepts are in the news weekly. We will not have these resources without your help as the school does not have the funds to obtain these. Imagine taking your OWN NEWSPAPER home and reading it to your family, sharing the scientific ideas and explaining them. What a feeling!
