My Students

Putting your hands to work to learn how our ancestors created materials brings the past to life! My students need hands-on activities to inspire their learning, encourage them to delve into creating works of art, and help them recognize the artist inside.

My students come from a places across a large urban area.

Financially, 60% of them receive free or reduced lunch. This factor almost eliminates most of my kids from being able to spend extra money for projects in class. Additionally, I have a large percentage of students who are special needs or at-risk or English as a second language learners. These students are particularly helped in their learning when they have concrete objects that they are able to put their hands and minds around.

My Project

Kentucky is the only state that requires a credit in the History of Visual and Performing Arts in order to graduate. Before I started teaching this class, students watched power point and slide presentations to learn about the art of the past. I not only want them to learn about the great artists, but to understand them by experiencing how it feels to make the art, by discovering the artist in themselves. In this project, my students will use reed and wooden bases as I teach them how to weave simple baskets. After achieving this task, we will use basket kits to create a double weave basket that is much more complex.

By learning how grasses were used by the native peoples, the Amish of our area and the people of Appalachia to create beautiful and useful objects, by students will experience not only the joy of creation but the pride that comes from successfully completing something worth doing.

For many of my students, this success may be the first they have ever experienced. That success on one small project can translate into success in other classes.
