Name that Fish!

My students need 24 field guides to identify fish species when snorkeling.

My Students

"I saw a fish that had to be 12 inches long! What was that?" It's hard for me to know which fish species my students are referring to. Sometimes, by the time we get back to the classroom, they have forgotten what it looked like. A field guide would allow students to look it up on the spot!

My students range from Kindergarten to 5th grade.

The school is a public charter school that focuses on Marine science in Key West. The school is located on a military base, so the majority of my students are children of active military. They are all community service oriented, and some are very patriotic. We utilize Inquiry Learning, so the students learn what they are interested in and are able to go as in depth as they desire.

My Project

Key West offers exposure to many marine ecosystems. I take students in the field. Children experience first-hand new fish species while snorkeling. Having a species identification book on field trips allows students the ability to look up a new species immediately after seeing it. Students develop a lifelong skill of using field guides to seek information about their observations. Additional information is provided in these field guides to help students better understand distribution and behavior of each species.

Inquiry Learning allows students the opportunity to delve into science headfirst.

Students learn by experience and by making connections. Snorkeling teaches students to love and protect their unique environment, but the field guides give the students a tool to make immediate connections to the animals they just encountered. Field guides are interdisciplinary. Once they learn how, and are comfortable using this field guide, they will be able to further their knowledge with any field guide.
