My Students

During the school year our students struggle to obtain school supplies from home. I purchase materials weekly but it is never enough. We need basic classroom supplies. Bob Dylan wrote a song titled "Everything is Broken." Much in our school is like that. Teacher and student basic classroom needs are often unmet.

Our public school serves at-risk students from a tough neighborhood.

We are a K-8 school. I teach fourth graders. The kids are of an African American or Puerto Rican heritage. We have high expectations for their academic performance and behavior but sometimes asking them to have a pencil seems naive, given their home environments. Some are just lucky to make it in the door. I hate to charge them even a mere nickel. They are bright and take pride in themselves when they succeed. They just need opportunity and peace.

My Project

Two years ago I was lucky to receive donations for my first Donors Choose project. The materials requested were almost the same as this proposal--pencils, paper, chart pads, etc. During that year I would regularly use the materials and feel satisfied, and grateful, that I could supply my students pencils and paper, or that I could reach for a fresh sheet of chart paper during a lesson. It was like having abundance amid squalor. Our class had had problems, but materials weren't one of them. This fact gave our class the momentum we needed. One less thing to worry about. I anticipate having our first computer in the classroom and I am requesting a computer printer for our writing center. Children love to see their writing print output from a computer. This will give them impetus to work the writing process to its publishing stage.

When it comes to supplying teachers with classroom materials, our school continues to drop the ball.

I fully expect to run to my local five and dime or Staples to buy supplies for my class, as I always do. By donating to Leveling the Playing Field you will be putting pencils and paper into the little hands whose simple needs other kids might take for granted. Thanks for helping to fix our problem.
